This concept aims to increase the fill ratio and speed up the discharge operation. When excavating, there is sufficient force to collect all the material into the bucket, but when emptying, the only engaged force is low lunar gravity, which might not be optimal for narrow and curvy interior sectio of a closed drum bucket ion:The shovel drum excavates the soil, which is traported via a shovel chamber up where falls out into the bucket. When full, the shovels rotate revee while two independently hanging metal needles behind the shovel chamber push into the bucket wall. They are protected when the shovel orbits the bucket. For higher reliability, another pair is on the opposite side. Due to a low gravity, the drum is open here, which allows a quick tion:A 3D printed model confirmed satisfactory operation (please check the video below), but some friction forcing the freely suspended bucket to roll over as well. In this updated design, the bucket and shovel segment is mounted on an extended CF shaft. This fixed shaft allows adding a simple groove in the tramission housing cover, which limits the bucket travel. The shovel drum is connected to the driving rod at the end of this extended : High fill ratio, quick and reliable discharge, reinforced drum axle, can drive-assist during traport without losing regolith, can collect rocks (sieving at the dump).Co: Axle’s exteion and additional hardware will increase the total mass of about 0,7 kg/1 drumSpecification:Dimeion: 443/310mmTotal mass: 4,7kg (design allows potentially to remove two of the three guides which give -400g)Material: bucket CF, shovel Al/CFA single scoop width/volume: 71mm/~0,35lBucket volume: ~25lFill ratio: 99%Bucket full in 8-10 tur @20 RPM (1scoop 0,35lx8=2,8 l/1 turn ==>28l/10 tur)The test demotrated the efficiency of the open shovel bucket, comparing to the closed one. The strengths were mentioned, but there are some weaknesses, of coue. All the friction between the shovel and the bucket is actually not that bad and can be further reduced by some surface redesigning. An undesirable regolith fragment intrusion between shovel and bucket is a separate chapter. There is a promising solution, very simple and robust, I'm on it. Also, shovel chamber entry requires some more care, material optimization wasn't done at all and many many more. But anyway, big thanks for this challenge. I had a lot of fun with this project!
